Armed bandits have launched separate deadly attacks in Niger State, killing a Mobile Police (MOPOL) officer and a vigilante member in two different local government areas.
According to reports, gunmen attacked Mangoro town in Mariga Local Government Area on Tuesday evening, July 8, 2025. Security expert Bakatsine confirmed on his X handle that the assailants killed several people, including a MOPOL officer, and abducted two women during the raid.
In a separate incident, suspected armed bandits killed a vigilante member during an attack on Kubule village near Babanna in Borgu Local Government Area of the state. The attack occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 7, when a large number of armed men stormed the area and opened fire on residents working on their farms.
Zagazola Makama reported on X that the vigilante member, identified as Tanko Isah, was shot and killed during the assault. Following the attack, security operatives from New-Bussa visited the scene and evacuated the victim's body to the General Hospital in Babanna for autopsy.
These attacks add to the growing security concerns in Niger State, which has been grappling with increased bandit activities in recent months. Local authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incidents.
The attacks come amid calls from various stakeholders, including the Etsu Nupe, for collective resources and re-strategizing to tackle the security challenges in the state.
