The member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency and Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has presented compelling arguments for the creation of a new state and additional local government areas in Benue State's Zone C ahead of the Constitutional Review Public Hearing for North Central B.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Agbese emphasized that the proposed restructuring would significantly improve governance by bringing it closer to the people, enhancing service delivery, expanding economic opportunities, and fostering greater accountability at the grassroots level.

The lawmaker reaffirmed his strong support for the creation of Apa State and the establishment of new local government areas in Enone, including Avovo, Ari, and Ufia from Ado; Okam and Owukpa from Ogbadibo; and Edumoga Ehaje and Edumoga Itso from Okpokwu.

"By creating new local governments and Apa State, we can bridge the gap between our people and governance, ensuring that they receive the attention and resources they deserve," Agbese stated. "When you have local governments that are closer to the people, you have more effective governance. The people would have more access to their leaders, and this would lead to more responsive governance."

Benefits of Apa State Creation

On the push for Apa State, Rep. Agbese maintained that it would serve as a platform for accelerated development, enabling the region to address its distinct challenges and harness opportunities with greater autonomy and dedicated resources.

"Apa State would be a catalyst for growth and development in our region. We have the human and natural resources, and with the creation of Apa State, we would be able to unlock our full potential," he explained.

The lawmaker highlighted historical marginalization as a key factor driving the push for a new state. "Historically, our region has been marginalized in terms of resource allocation and infrastructural development. Apa State would provide a platform for accelerated development, allowing us to address our unique challenges and opportunities with the autonomy and resources that come with statehood."

Addressing Potential Challenges

When questioned about possible hurdles, Agbese acknowledged there would be challenges but expressed optimism that they could be surmounted with collective effort.

"We are not naive to the challenges that come with creating new states and local governments. But I believe that with determination, hard work, and the support of the people, we can overcome these challenges and build a brighter future for our region," he said.

The Representative called on fellow citizens, community leaders, traditional institutions, and all stakeholders to support the initiative. "Let us seize this moment of constitutional review to reshape our future and ensure that our constituency gets the attention and resources it deserves," he urged.

The Constitutional Review Public Hearing for North Central B is expected to provide a platform for various stakeholders to present their views on the proposed amendments to the Nigerian Constitution, including the creation of new states and local government areas.
