Peter Obi, 2027 presidential aspirant and former Labour Party candidate in the 2023 general election, has declared that northern Nigeria will celebrate his leadership if he becomes president, citing his plans to harness the region's untapped potential.
Speaking as a guest on Channels Television's Sunday Politics programme, Obi, who is now a key figure in the newly formed opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform, emphasized the north's significant but underutilized resources.
"The biggest asset of this country is in the north, the uncultivated lands in the north. The criminality we face in the north today, I will deal with it," Obi stated during the interview.
He highlighted that the northern region comprises 19 states with vast arable land and significant voter strength, advantages that have been undermined by persistent insecurity challenges.
Obi called for a shift in voting patterns, urging Nigerians to prioritize competence over tribal and religious considerations. "We have voted for incompetence, we've voted for tribe, (and) we've voted for religion; let's vote for competence," he remarked.
The presidential hopeful expressed confidence in his ability to transform the region, stating, "If I am president, the North will celebrate me. I have an idea of the problem."
This statement comes as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Obi recently clarifying that he remains in the Labour Party despite his association with the ADC coalition.
