A man identified as Usman Ali has dragged his newlywed wife to a Sharia Court in Kano State, accusing her of stealing three mobile phones valued at approximately ₦65,000.

The case, which was heard at the Sharia Court sitting in Jaba, Kano State, has attracted attention as the wife, Maryam, vehemently denied the allegations leveled against her by her husband.

During the court proceedings, Maryam told the court that she had traveled from Abuja to Kano after suffering repeated physical abuse from her husband. She claimed that the alleged beatings forced her to seek refuge at her parents' home.

Additional Accusations Against Friends

In a surprising twist to the case, Usman also filed a complaint against three other women whom he identified as Maryam's friends. He accused them of negatively influencing his wife and encouraging her to engage in what he described as inappropriate outings.

The presiding judge, Ustaz Rabiu Yahaya, after hearing both parties, granted Maryam bail. The case has been adjourned to July 15 for further hearing to allow for more evidence to be presented.

This case highlights the complexities of marital disputes that sometimes find their way into the judicial system, particularly in northern Nigeria where Sharia courts handle family matters among Muslims.

The allegations of domestic abuse raised by Maryam also bring to light the often-hidden issue of spousal violence that many women face in silence.
