A businessman, Abdulrazak Yunusa, has approached a Sharia court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking protection from his former wife, Latifat Sanusi, whom he alleges has been threatening to kill him.
During the court session on Monday, Yunusa's counsel, Faham Ahmad, told the court that the ex-wife had threatened to stab his client and had also menaced him with a pestle on multiple occasions.
"Sometimes she threatens my client with a pestle. I am afraid she wants to kill me," Ahmad stated while representing Yunusa.
The businessman's legal team requested a restraining order to prevent Yunusa from visiting his former wife's parents' home until the case is resolved.
Sanusi, however, denied the allegations when given the opportunity to respond. She maintained that she had no intention of harming the father of her children.
After hearing both parties, the presiding judge, Malam Muhammad Kabir, referred the case to the police for further investigation. The matter has been adjourned until June 11 for continuation.
The case highlights the serious nature of domestic disputes that sometimes persist even after divorce, particularly when children are involved.
Legal experts note that restraining orders are increasingly being sought in Nigerian courts as awareness grows about domestic violence and threats, regardless of gender.
