Dumebi Kachikwu, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2023 general elections, has strongly criticized members of the newly formed opposition coalition, describing them as "enemies of Nigeria" who would reverse the nation's progress.
Speaking on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television's 'Politics Today', Kachikwu expressed his disapproval of the political alliance that recently adopted the ADC as its operational platform for the upcoming 2027 elections.
"They are enemies of Nigeria. They are enemies of progress. Nigerians can no longer be fooled. Nigerians from all walks of life watched the video—I just saw it today—and what you saw in that hall were 'former' this and 'former' that: former Vice President, former governors, former ministers. All these 'formers' are taking Nigeria back to its former glory. They've never taken us forward," Kachikwu stated.
Recycling of Political Leaders
The ex-presidential candidate lamented what he described as the recycling of political leaders who, according to him, are responsible for Nigeria's current challenges. He pointed out that the coalition is predominantly composed of older politicians who have held power for decades and continue to position themselves for leadership roles, while younger Nigerians remain marginalized in the political space.
BenriNews reports that Kachikwu had previously mentioned he was watching the announced takeover of the ADC leadership by the coalition "with amusement."
The criticism comes at a time when political realignments are taking shape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with various opposition parties seeking to form alliances to challenge the ruling party.
Kachikwu's comments highlight the ongoing tensions within Nigeria's political landscape, particularly regarding generational shifts in leadership and the recycling of political figures who have dominated the scene for decades.
