Famous American televangelist, Jimmy Swaggart, has died at the age of 90, according to an announcement made on his official Facebook page on Tuesday. The renowned preacher reportedly passed away two weeks after suffering a cardiac arrest at his Louisiana home on June 15, 2025.
Swaggart, who was once the most recognized Pentecostal preacher in the United States, served as the pastor of the Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge. His ministry reached millions through television broadcasts during the height of his influence in the 1980s.
Controversial Legacy
Swaggart's reputation was significantly damaged in the late 1980s following a series of sex scandals. In 1988, after accusing fellow preacher Marvin Gorman of infidelity, Swaggart himself was caught on camera with a prostitute in New Orleans. Gorman had hired a private investigator who documented the encounter, triggering a national scandal.
The controversy prompted Swaggart to temporarily step down from preaching. During a tearful sermon addressing the incident in 1988, he famously told his parishioners, "I have sinned against you. I beg you to forgive me."
Despite the scandal tarnishing his image, Swaggart continued his preaching ministry for decades afterward, though with a significantly reduced audience compared to his earlier years of prominence.
Swaggart's passing marks the end of an era for American televangelism, where he stood as both an influential religious figure and a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of fame and public ministry.
