Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has issued a stern warning to Northern Nigeria against supporting Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, in his bid to secure the opposition coalition's ticket for the 2027 elections.

Omokri's warning comes in response to Obi's recent statement that he would agree to serve as president for only one term before handing power back to the North if given the coalition's backing.

Historical Parallels and Broken Promises

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Omokri drew parallels between the potential scenario and Cameroon's political history, stating: "If Arewa makes the mistake of backing the coalition and giving their Presidential ticket to Peter Obi, exactly what happened to Northern Cameroon after Ahmadou Ahidjo resigned on November 4, 1982, is what will happen to Northern Nigeria."

He further claimed that the Hausa and Fulani became "the most marginalised ethnicities in Cameroon" after Paul Biya failed to honor promises made to Ahidjo. Omokri questioned whether Obi could be trusted to keep his word to Northern Nigeria.

"A man who could not keep a promise to Ojukwu will now stay true to his pledge to Arewa? Believe that, and prepare for the Cameroon treatment," Omokri warned.

Obi's Position on Coalition

While Peter Obi has expressed willingness to accept a one-term presidency arrangement if offered the coalition's ticket, he clarified that there was no agreement for a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Omokri also raised concerns about Obi's silence on certain regional issues, questioning: "Today, millions of innocent Nigerian citizens will be forced to observe the infamous Monday sit-at-home in the Southeast. Has this same Peter Obi ever condemned IPOB or their sit-at-home?"

The former presidential aide concluded by assuring Northerners that they have a friend in President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing Tinubu's loyalty during the previous electoral cycle.

As political maneuvering for the 2027 elections intensifies, these exchanges highlight the complex negotiations and trust issues within Nigeria's opposition coalition efforts.
