Deadly Floods Ravage Borno Communities, Leaving 2 Dead and Many Homeless

At least two people have been confirmed dead following a devastating flood that swept through Gumsuri and Wovi communities in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State on Sunday.

The disaster, triggered by 12 to 13 hours of torrential rainfall, has left dozens of families homeless and caused extensive damage to residential structures across both communities.

Widespread Devastation

Initial assessments reveal that nearly half of all residential buildings in the affected areas have been either severely damaged or completely submerged. Many residents were forced to evacuate to higher ground, abandoning their homes and possessions.

"We are overwhelmed," a community elder from Gumsuri told reporters. "Many have lost everything. We fear more bodies may be found as search efforts continue."

Local residents have described the situation as critical and are appealing to the government, humanitarian organizations, and well-meaning individuals for emergency assistance, including temporary shelter, food supplies, and medical aid.

Ongoing Emergency Response

According to reports from Zagazola Makama, emergency response teams are currently working to determine the full extent of the devastation and verify the final casualty figures.

This disaster comes as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted three days of thunderstorms and rainfall beginning Monday, raising concerns about potential additional flooding in vulnerable areas.
