A devastating incident occurred in Ogun State on Saturday afternoon when a heavy rainstorm accompanied by thunder and lightning killed 32 cows in the Odeda Local Government Area.

The tragic event took place around 12 p.m. at Osara in the Obantoko area of Abeokuta, affecting livestock owned by both Hausa/Fulani herders and members of the local Yoruba community.

Community Response to the Incident

According to Baale of Osara, Wasiu Afolabi, Fulani herders alerted him to the tragedy at approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday. The incident was promptly reported to the Aregbe Police Division and the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Afolashade Adeyemo.

"We have reported the incident to the Aregbe Police Division as well as the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo, and other relevant authorities," Afolabi stated.

The Baale further revealed that a meeting with the Fulani community had been scheduled to determine the next steps and ensure the incident does not disrupt the peace in the area.

"We have equally scheduled a meeting with the Fulani to know what to do next and also ensure that the incident does not affect the peace of the community," he added.

Police Confirmation

Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that the command was alerted around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, and officers from the Aregbe Division had visited the scene.

"The Command is well aware. The incident was reported to DPO Aregbe Division at about 13:30 hours on Saturday," Ogunlowo said. "He led a team to the scene. Thirty-two cows were struck dead when thunder and lightning occurred during a heavy downpour of rain."
