A deadly reprisal attack has claimed the lives of at least 10 civilians in Tofa village, Zamfara State, following a clash between rival bandit groups that escalated into violence against innocent residents.
The tragic chain of events began on Saturday, June 22, when a notorious bandit identified as Uban Gora, who operates from the western side of Tofa village in Magami District, Gusau Local Government Area, intercepted and robbed a Golf vehicle traveling from Dansadau.
According to security sources, this robbery angered a rival bandit group operating from the eastern flank of the village, who confronted Uban Gora in what observers describe as an unusual instance of conflict among criminal factions in the region.
Fatal Confrontation Leads to Civilian Casualties
The confrontation quickly escalated from verbal exchanges to violence, resulting in Uban Gora being fatally shot. In retaliation, Uban Gora's gang leader reportedly mobilized heavily armed men who launched an overnight assault on Tofa village on Sunday, June 23.
Under the cover of darkness, the attackers stormed the community, opening fire indiscriminately on residents without warning. The brutal attack left 10 people dead and several others with gunshot wounds, according to local reports.
Residents of Tofa village have expressed deep concern over their safety, stating that they now live under uncertain conditions and fear further violence. They have called on government authorities to take swift action to prevent additional attacks and provide security for the community.
Rising Insecurity in Zamfara
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Zamfara State, where banditry has remained a persistent problem despite government efforts to curb criminal activities. The unusual conflict between rival bandit groups adds a new dimension to the security concerns in the region.
Security analysts note that such inter-gang rivalries could potentially lead to increased violence against civilian populations caught in the crossfire, as evidenced by the tragic events in Tofa village.
As of the time of reporting, authorities have not released an official statement regarding the incident or measures being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.
