Senator Ali Ndume has revealed details of how President Bola Tinubu allegedly abandoned former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi following the 2023 presidential election, despite initial attempts at reconciliation.
Ndume, who served as Director-General of Amaechi's presidential campaign during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries, made these revelations during a recent interview with Arise News. According to the Borno South Senator, Tinubu had initially expressed willingness to meet with Amaechi and incorporate him into his government after securing the party's ticket.
"We had 315 votes. We gave them a good fight. And then after that, we thought things would go on fine," Ndume stated. "I remember vividly that Tinubu, the Governor of Lagos [Sanwo-Olu], the current Minister of Defence... came to call me to say he [Tinubu] wants to come and meet with myself and Amaechi."
The senator explained that the meeting was scheduled to take place after his return from Hajj. "The President said, 'Look, we want you to come on board, and let's work together'. And we agreed, and then we agreed that we'd meet after I come back, and that meeting did not hold. That was how they abandoned Amaechi," Ndume revealed.
Strained Political Relationship
The relationship between President Tinubu and Amaechi, once political allies, has reportedly deteriorated since the general elections. Sources indicate that Amaechi has become a leading member of a national coalition of political leaders opposing President Tinubu's potential re-election bid in 2027.
Ndume, who is 65 years old and has spent 24 years in politics, emphasized his commitment to speaking truth to power. "God has given everything to me. The only thing I have to do right now, and I am prepared to die doing it, is to speak the truth and do what is right," he stated during the interview.
These revelations come amid growing tensions within the ruling APC, as various factions position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
