Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged his country's support to Iran following recent airstrikes on Iranian territory carried out by the United States and Israel.
During a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Moscow on Monday, Putin condemned the strikes as "absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran," affirming that Russia stands firmly with the Iranian people.
"We have had long, good and reliable relations with Iran. From our side, we will undertake efforts to support the Iranian people," Putin stated in remarks released by the Kremlin. However, he did not provide specifics on the nature of the support Russia would offer.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov later clarified that the form of assistance would depend on Iran's expressed needs. He also noted that Moscow is prepared to mediate in the escalating conflict.
Strengthened Military Cooperation
Russia and Iran have significantly strengthened their ties in recent years, particularly in military cooperation. Iran has supplied drones to Russia in support of its operations in Ukraine, and both nations continue to collaborate on regional and international matters.
The meeting comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East following the US and Israeli strikes on Iranian territory. Putin also held separate talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani to discuss the broader Middle East crisis.
This development marks another significant alignment between Russia and Iran on the international stage, potentially complicating Western diplomatic efforts in the region.
The situation continues to evolve as regional powers respond to the escalating conflict between Iran and Western-aligned forces.
