Former US President Donald Trump has made a startling claim that he intervened to prevent the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during the recent Israel-Iran conflict.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump asserted that he "saved Khamenei from a very ugly and ignominious death" by halting what he described as a major Israeli offensive targeting Tehran.
"In fact, in the final act of the War, I demanded that Israel bring back a very large group of planes, which were heading directly to Tehran. Tremendous damage would have ensued, and many Iranians would have been killed," Trump stated.
"Iran Has No Future"
The former president described Iran as a "blown up" country with a decimated military, boldly asserting that the nation "has no future." This harsh assessment comes despite Trump hinting at a broader plan he had considered to ease sanctions and facilitate Iran's recovery.
According to Trump, the Iranian leadership responded to his potential sanctions relief with "anger, hatred, and disgust," which prompted him to abandon all efforts toward easing economic restrictions on the country.
Trump also criticized Khamenei for declaring victory in the war with Israel, describing the Supreme Leader's claim as "blatantly and foolishly false." The former president suggested he had specific knowledge of Khamenei's location during the height of the conflict.
These statements come amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with Iran and Israel having engaged in direct military exchanges earlier this year—a significant escalation in their long-standing hostilities.
Neither Iranian officials nor the Israeli government have responded to Trump's claims at the time of reporting.
