Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman has issued a stark warning against the recently announced ceasefire between Israel and Iran, cautioning that any truce lacking clear and binding agreements could lead to renewed conflict within a few years.
Speaking at the Knesset on Monday, the veteran opposition leader and former defense minister criticized the international community for rushing into what he described as "difficult and tedious negotiations" rather than securing Iran's unconditional surrender following Israel's recent military campaign.
"The final Iranian attacks on Israel, even after our incredible military achievements in the past week and a half, were particularly jarring and bitter," Liberman stated during his address.
"Instead of forcing Tehran into full capitulation, the world is now engaged in appeasement with a regime that has no intention of giving up uranium enrichment, ballistic missile production, or its support for terrorism," he added.
Concerns Over Long-term Security
Liberman cautioned that any ceasefire reached without firm, verifiable commitments from Iran would amount to "leaving a wounded lion on the battlefield."
"A ceasefire without a clear and unambiguous agreement will certainly lead us to another war in two or three years, and under much worse conditions," he warned, echoing concerns from security experts about Iran's ability to rebuild its capabilities under a weak truce.
While the Israeli government has hailed Operation Rising Lion as a decisive blow against Iran's nuclear and military infrastructure, Liberman maintained that the absence of a formal disarmament framework renders the operation's long-term strategic gains uncertain.
The ceasefire comes amid reports that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has agreed to former US President Trump's proposal for a truce with Iran, and Tehran has reportedly confirmed its agreement to the terms.
Meanwhile, other Israeli political figures have expressed varying positions on the ceasefire, with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich hailing it as a "crushing victory" over Iran while opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Yair Golan have urged an end to the Gaza war following the Iran ceasefire.
The Hostage Forum has also warned that ending the Iran operation without securing a Gaza hostage deal would constitute a "grave diplomatic failure."
