The family of Dr. Abubakar Ahmad, a lecturer at the Federal College of Horticulture in Gombe State, has made an emotional appeal to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, seeking his intervention in a defamation case that has led to the academic's detention.

Dr. Ahmad was arrested after responding to a police invitation connected to a defamation complaint filed by Shamsudeen, the governor's son. The complaint stems from a video the lecturer shared on social media—reportedly one that has been circulating for over seven years and shared by numerous others.

Family's Emotional Appeal

During a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Bauchi, Maryam Abubakar, the lecturer's mother, highlighted their family's political loyalty while pleading for compassion.

"He is a staunch PDP member and supporter of Governor Bala. Because of him, we all supported the PDP. We are asking the governor as a father to please help us secure his release," she stated, emphasizing the hardship the family has endured since her son's detention.

Fatimah Muhammad, the lecturer's wife, broke down while addressing journalists. "Shamsudeen and my husband once knew each other. I'm begging him to consider the suffering of our family. Please reconsider this action and let my husband go. Life has been complicated since he was remanded," she pleaded.

She further urged Governor Mohammed to speak with his son about finding an amicable resolution. "I'm not speaking just as a wife but as a mother. We are suffering. Please, let mercy prevail."

Legal Proceedings

Barrister Ahmad Hassan, Dr. Abubakar's legal representative, confirmed that his client faces charges under Sections 386, 388, and 391 of the Bauchi State Penal Code Law (2022) for alleged defamation, injurious falsehood, and criminal intimidation.

After two court appearances, the presiding magistrate referred the case to police for investigation. Subsequently, Dr. Abubakar was detained and later remanded in prison custody, with proceedings adjourned until July 9, 2025.

Hassan added that the defence team has filed for judicial review before the Bauchi State Chief Judge, though the request awaits assignment. "We're doing everything possible to ensure his rights are protected and to facilitate his safe return home," the lawyer stated.

The case has raised concerns about freedom of expression and the use of defamation laws in Nigeria, particularly when involving public figures or their family members.
