Umar Jada, popularly known as 'Calculate,' a prominent political critic and ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has been granted bail by an Adamawa State High Court following days in detention over defamation allegations.
The court on Tuesday set bail at N1 million with a surety in like sum who must be based in Yola, significantly reducing the previous conditions set by the Chief Magistrate Court II which had demanded a first-class emir as surety and a N5 million bail bond.
Background of the Case
Calculate's legal troubles began when elder statesman Sadiq Wali Walin Ganye and his son, Adamu Wali, filed a defamation lawsuit claiming that Calculate's statements had damaged the elder Wali's reputation. Unable to meet the stringent bail conditions initially set, Calculate spent the entire Sallah holiday period in detention.
His legal team subsequently filed an ex-parte motion for judicial review before the Adamawa State High Court, which resulted in the more reasonable bail terms granted on Tuesday.
Property Demolition Controversy
The dispute between Calculate and the Walin Ganye family reportedly escalated when Mohammed Sadiq, another son of Walin Ganye and the current Adamawa State Commissioner for Environment, ordered the demolition of a property belonging to Calculate.
Calculate had publicly linked the demolition to his ongoing conflict with the commissioner's father. However, the commissioner has denied these allegations, insisting there was no ulterior motive behind the demolition action.
Calls for Reconciliation
Senator Ishaku Abbo, who has been mediating the dispute in his personal capacity, urged all parties to pursue peace following the court session.
"This is not a political war; it is a family issue. Calculate and the Walin Ganye have shared a father-son relationship for many years. What happened was unfortunate, but we must prioritize peace," Abbo told reporters after the court proceedings.
The case highlights tensions within Adamawa's political landscape, particularly among figures associated with different political factions in the state.
