Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed details of an agreement between himself, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi regarding their planned political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, El-Rufai disclosed that all three political figures have agreed to abandon their current political affiliations in favor of a new platform if they reach consensus on which party to adopt.

"When I joined the SDP, I made it very clear, just like every other person. Just like Atiku is in the PDP and Peter Obi has not officially left the Labour Party, but we all agreed that if we have a consensus on a platform, we are going to give up our legacy parties and focus on the platform," El-Rufai stated.

The former governor emphasized that the coalition is still in its formative stages. "We are still not there yet. The leadership will receive a report on the engagement with the SDP and other parties, and a decision will be taken," he explained.

Public Dissatisfaction with Current Administration

El-Rufai cited polling data suggesting widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration as motivation for the coalition's formation. "Nigerians are tired of the APC, we know that. We have polled that. There is a 91% disapproval of this administration across the country. It is the worst in Nigerian history, but Nigerians are looking for credible options," he remarked.

The revelation comes amid ongoing discussions about potential opposition alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. While El-Rufai has joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Atiku remains in the People's Democratic Party (PDP), and Obi has not officially announced his departure from the Labour Party.

Political analysts view this development as a significant step toward consolidating opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next electoral cycle.

The coalition talks are occurring as various political stakeholders position themselves for what promises to be a highly contested presidential race in 2027.
