Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has vowed that the 2027 general election will be tough for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the opposition coalition being formed to unseat the current government "is not a joke."
Atiku made this declaration while addressing a delegation of Kannywood and key North West opinion leaders who paid him a courtesy visit, according to a statement he posted on social media on Tuesday.
"The opposition coalition being put together is not a joke, and it will soon be unveiled," Atiku told the delegation. "The envisaged coalition is a deliberate effort to recover and rebuild Nigeria in line with the yearnings and aspirations of the people."
North West Stakeholders Pledge Support
The delegation, led by Dr. Aslam Aliyu, a prominent Zamfara politician who heads the PAA 2027, NEW MEDIA & DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS FORUM, informed Atiku that they are building a coalition of digital media stakeholders ahead of 2027 to support the coalition of opposition political leaders.
The forum comprises members of Kannywood, Zamfara TOP 10, and other groups. According to Atiku, the stakeholders expressed that their commitment is based on a review of the 2023 election outcomes and the voter awareness and information gaps identified during that period.
Interestingly, some members of the forum who reportedly played roles in the election of President Tinubu-led APC government expressed "deep regrets about foisting an incompetent and clueless leadership on Nigeria" and pledged to support the ongoing coalition efforts of opposition leaders.
"I assured the forum that 2027 will not be business as usual," Atiku stated, reinforcing his determination to challenge the current administration in the next general election.
This development comes amid growing speculation about potential realignments in Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, with various opposition figures reportedly holding discussions on forming a united front against the ruling party.
The former PDP presidential candidate's statement suggests significant political maneuvers are underway, though details of the coalition's composition and platform remain undisclosed for now.
