Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, has strongly condemned the United States for its recent military strikes targeting Iran's nuclear facilities, warning that Washington has opened a "Pandora's box" with potentially catastrophic consequences for global security.
Speaking during an emergency special meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Sunday, Nebenzia accused the US of prioritizing its alliance with Israel over international stability and human lives.
"Washington reasserted that to further the interests of its Israeli ally, it is prepared not only to turn a blind eye to the killings of tens of thousands of Palestinian women, children and older persons but also to gamble with the safety and well-being of humanity as a whole," Nebenzia stated.
The Russian diplomat emphasized the gravity of the situation, adding: "Through their actions, the US has opened a Pandora's box; no one knows what new catastrophes and suffering it will bring."
Calls for De-escalation
Nebenzia called for an immediate cessation of what he described as "aggressive actions" by the United States and Israel against Iran. He urged all parties involved to return to diplomatic channels and negotiation processes to prevent further escalation of conflict in the Middle East.
The emergency meeting comes amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, with the US-led strikes representing a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. The attacks specifically targeted Iran's nuclear infrastructure, raising concerns about regional stability and nuclear proliferation.
Several other nations have also responded to the strikes. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have jointly urged Iran to resume nuclear talks, while Qatar has called for de-escalation and a return to diplomacy. Meanwhile, Iranian President Pezeshkian has stated that the US "must receive a response" to the nuclear strikes.
The military action has already had economic repercussions, with global oil prices rising by nearly 3% following the US strikes on Iran.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has added to the tensions by claiming that "many countries" are ready to provide Iran with nuclear weapons in the wake of the US strikes.
As the situation continues to develop, international observers remain concerned about the potential for further escalation in what is already a volatile region.
