Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Rema has revealed that he finds joy in being trolled on social media, citing the unexpected benefits that have emerged from criticism of his unique sound.
In a recent video interview shared across social media platforms, the musician reflected on his career journey, explaining how the constant online criticism has paradoxically contributed to his global success and artistic growth.
"It is beautiful to see something that people troll and criticise me for. And, you know what? I'm benefiting from that," Rema stated. "Imagine if I had stopped or listened to trolls. Like if I should say oh, I think I should switch it off."
Perseverance Pays Off
The "Calm Down" hitmaker emphasized how devastating it would have been had he abandoned his artistic vision due to negative comments. Instead, his persistence has led to remarkable achievements in the industry.
"And four years later, it paid and it paid. And more to come. You know, because it's a huge territory, right? And I was actually the first Afrobeat to tour India. And I even came from Africa if I'm not mistaken. But it is a huge deal," he added.
Rema's journey serves as an inspiration to emerging artists facing skepticism about their unique styles, demonstrating how staying true to one's artistic vision can ultimately lead to unprecedented success.
His groundbreaking achievements include his album "Rave & Roses Ultra" becoming the first African album to hit 3 billion streams on YouTube Music, and recent nominations for prestigious awards including the 2025 BET Awards alongside fellow Nigerian stars Burna Boy and Ayra Starr.
