Cyprus authorities have arrested a British man suspected of planning an "immediate attack" on the island while allegedly spying on British military bases on behalf of Iran, according to security officials.
The suspect, who reportedly has connections to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), appeared before a judge on Saturday where his detention was extended by eight days as investigations continue into terrorism and espionage charges.
Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa'ar confirmed that Israeli citizens in Cyprus were the intended targets of the foiled attack. "Thanks to the activities of the Cypriot security authorities, in cooperation with the Israeli security services, the terrorist attack was foiled," Sa'ar stated.
The minister expressed Israel's gratitude to Cyprus for its "swift and effective actions" while condemning Iran's regime. "The Iranian criminal regime is deliberately targeting Israeli citizens both in Israel and abroad. Israel will continue to work to eliminate the existential threat posed by the Iranian terrorist regime," he added.
This incident comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, with recent protests erupting in Tehran and other Iranian cities against Israel. The international community remains concerned about potential wider conflict as relations between the two nations reach new heights of hostility.
The arrest also coincides with reports that the United States has moved B-2 bombers to Guam as former President Trump considers potential strikes against Iran, further highlighting the volatile situation in the Middle East.
