Iran has executed a man convicted of collaborating with Israel's intelligence agency, Mossad, according to reports from the semi-official Tasnim news agency on Monday.
The executed individual, identified as Mohammadamin Shayesteh, was arrested in late 2023 and accused of leading what Iranian authorities described as "a cyber-team affiliated with Mossad." He was sentenced to death after being found guilty of espionage and acting against Iran's national security.
According to Tasnim, Shayesteh's execution was carried out following the completion of judicial procedures. The agency did not specify the exact date or location of the execution.
Rising Tensions in the Region
The execution comes at a particularly sensitive time, following a series of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, which has further escalated the already volatile situation in the region. Iranian officials have vowed retaliation, while accusing Israel and its allies of conducting covert operations and acts of sabotage inside the country.
Iran has a history of accusing individuals of spying for foreign powers, particularly Israel, which it considers its arch-enemy. The Islamic Republic rarely releases detailed evidence in such cases, but executions for espionage-related charges have become more frequent amid rising tensions with Israel.
This development occurs against the backdrop of several international incidents, including world leaders' reactions to U.S. strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, warnings from Russia about potential nuclear proliferation, and Pope Leo's call for peaceful resolution to the escalating Middle East situation.
Iran's President Pezeshkian has stated that the U.S. "must receive a response" to the nuclear strikes, while former Russian President Medvedev has claimed that many countries are ready to provide Iran with nuclear weapons.
