Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has unveiled his final 24-player squad for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to July 26.
The squad announcement marks a significant return for Bay FC forward Asisat Oshoala, who rejoins the national team after an absence of nearly a year. Oshoala has not featured for the nine-time African champions since the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Key Players in the Squad
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade headlines the selection alongside several established internationals. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defenders Osinachi Ohale and Ashleigh Plumptre, and forwards Francisca Ordega and Michelle Alozie have all secured their places in the final squad.
The squad also features three home-based players – goalkeeper Rachael Unachukwu and defenders Sikiratu Isah and Miracle Usani – demonstrating Madugu's commitment to blending international experience with domestic talent.
Final Preparations Underway
As part of their tournament preparations, the Super Falcons will face Portugal in a friendly match in Lisbon next Monday. The team will then take on the Black Queens of Ghana in another warm-up fixture in Morocco on Sunday, June 29, just days before the tournament kicks off.
The 2024 WAFCON represents an opportunity for Nigeria to reassert their dominance in African women's football. Francisca Ordega has already expressed confidence in the team's readiness, stating that the Super Falcons are "ready to conquer Africa again."
The tournament will feature strong competition, with host nation Morocco looking to capitalize on home advantage and Botswana's President reportedly demanding victory against the Super Falcons and other opponents.
Nigeria enters the competition as the most successful team in WAFCON history with nine titles, and will be aiming to add a tenth championship to their impressive record.
