Renowned Nigerian rapper, Tobechukwu Melvin Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, has strongly criticized the Nigerian government for what he describes as a woeful failure in supporting the country's young population.
Speaking on a recent episode of The Real Shareholders podcast, Illbliss painted a grim picture of the challenges facing Nigerian youth today, stating emphatically that "it is a tough time" to be a young person in Nigeria.
Culture of Mediocrity and Government Failure
The rapper expressed concern about what he sees as a growing culture of mediocrity among young people, coupled with government policies that have left many feeling abandoned and desperate.
"This generation celebrates not just mediocrity but also lack of decision. Everything is 'cool.' So, under the cool theory people are allowed to overdose on drugs, they are allowed to live their lives the way they want to. They are allowed to not work and be entitled," Illbliss remarked.
He added more pointedly: "Also, the government has woefully failed young people in this country in the last years. I know boys that are telling me, 'Oga boss, we dey street, we dey press because government no send.' That's their reality."
Desperate Measures in Desperate Times
The "Dat Way" crooner shared a particularly troubling anecdote about the extreme measures some young Nigerians feel forced to take due to economic hardship.
"Someone was telling that he has to do fraud because salary can't buy his cancer patient mother's drug. So, young people are mentally defeated. They are tired. They are just doing whatever they can to keep their lives going," he revealed.
Summarizing the current state of affairs, Illbliss concluded: "It's a tough time being a young person in Nigeria. It's a tough time aging in Nigeria. It's a tough time being born in Nigeria."
This is not the first time the rapper has spoken out about societal issues in Nigeria. In previous statements, he has addressed various challenges facing the country, consistently advocating for better governance and opportunities for young Nigerians.
