The Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has successfully intercepted a substantial consignment of illicit drugs during an operation originally targeting illegal bunkering activities in the state.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the State Public Relations Officer, SC Ihemnacho Umeado, the operation led to the recovery of six jumbo-sized bags containing substances suspected to be cannabis sativa and "Canadian Loud." The drugs were discovered carefully concealed along the Ojikeiri River in Okrika Local Government Area.
Interagency Collaboration in Action
In line with established protocols for handling narcotics cases, the NSCDC has handed over the seized substances to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and appropriate action.
State Commandant of NSCDC, Joachin Okafor, praised the vigilance and dedication of his personnel that led to the significant seizure. He emphasized the importance of interagency collaboration in the fight against drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the state.
"This operation demonstrates our commitment to tackling all forms of criminality in Rivers State, even when we encounter unexpected challenges during our primary assignments," Commandant Okafor stated.
The Assistant Commander of Narcotics at NDLEA, ACN James Awoji, who received the confiscated items, commended the NSCDC for their efforts and reaffirmed both agencies' commitment to sustained cooperation in combating drug-related crimes across the state.
Ongoing Security Efforts
This seizure comes amid intensified efforts by security agencies to curb various forms of criminal activities in Rivers State, including illegal bunkering, drug trafficking, and cultism.
The operation highlights the growing concern about drug trafficking routes through Rivers State's extensive waterways, which security agencies continue to monitor closely.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities in their communities to help maintain security and reduce drug-related crimes in the state.
