Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has made a bold declaration that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot secure re-election in the upcoming 2027 general elections, citing widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration.
Speaking in a recent interview shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) chieftain stated categorically: "Anybody that thinks it is possible for President Bola Tinubu to get re-elected is living in another country, not Nigeria. It is impossible for Bola Tinubu to get re-elected."
El-Rufai, once a political ally of President Tinubu who supported his election in 2023, emphasized that Nigerians have lost faith in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and would not vote for them in the coming election. "I don't see a pathway for him," he added, suggesting that even the weakest opposition would defeat Tinubu due to public discontent with APC policies.
Coalition Building Against APC
The former governor dismissed the significance of politicians defecting to the ruling party, describing them as "greedy and hungry politicians" seeking financial gains, contracts, appointments, or protection from anti-corruption agencies.
"The other class of those defecting are those that know that the EFCC or ICPC can intimidate them, because they know what they have done if they have done what is not quite right," El-Rufai stated.
El-Rufai is now spearheading a coalition against the Tinubu administration through the SDP, alongside prominent political figures including former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
"We believe that the 2027 elections will be between the APC and Nigerians," he declared, indicating that their coalition is targeting voters directly rather than focusing on political defections.
Government Assurances Amid Public Discontent
El-Rufai's comments come despite recent assurances from the Tinubu administration that Nigerians' economic hardships would soon be alleviated. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, recently provided a summary of the government's economic interventions during a television interview.
However, El-Rufai's statements reflect growing opposition sentiment that the administration has failed to connect with citizens' immediate concerns, potentially setting the stage for a contentious electoral battle in 2027.
