The Northern Ethnic Youth Group Assembly (NEYGA) has issued a stern warning to suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, demanding she prove her allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio or face consequences.
NEYGA spokesman Ibrahim Dan-Musa, in a statement released on Tuesday, emphasized that Akpoti-Uduaghan's actions undermine the integrity of Nigeria's political system and challenged her to substantiate her defamatory claims in open court.
"A senator who peddles lies must face the consequences," Dan-Musa stated. "She cannot wake up one day, point fingers at high-ranking officials, and expect to walk away unscathed when challenged to prove her claims."
International Attention on the Case
The NEYGA spokesman also highlighted that the court proceedings have attracted global attention. "From the United Nations to Fox News, the international community is observing whether Nigeria will tolerate unsubstantiated defamation or uphold the rule of law," he added.
Dan-Musa further criticized former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili for defending the suspended lawmaker, describing her stance as hypocritical and emphasizing that nobody is above the law.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy began when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Senate President Akpabio of making sexual advances toward her and allegedly denying her certain privileges after she rejected his advances.
Following her inability to substantiate these allegations, Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended from the Senate for six months. Akpabio has since taken legal action, challenging the defamatory claims made against him.
The case continues to draw significant attention across Nigeria's political landscape, with observers watching closely how the judiciary will handle these serious allegations between two prominent political figures.
