Nigeria's Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has ordered the extension of its tax office operational hours to include weekends throughout June 2025, in a strategic move to boost revenue collection and meet its ambitious N25.2 trillion target for the year.

FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji issued this directive as part of the agency's commitment to enhancing its customer-centric policy with tangible action, according to a statement released by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS chairman.

Under the new directive, tax offices nationwide will now operate from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays and 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sundays throughout June. This extension coincides with the surge in company income tax filings, as firms with financial years ending on December 31 are required to submit their tax returns by June 30.

"To ease the process for taxpayers, enhance service delivery, and maximise tax collection during this critical period, management has approved the extension of tax office operations to weekends for the month of June 2025," the statement read.

Revenue Targets and Budget Context

BenriNews reports that FIRS collected N21.6 trillion in revenue in 2024 and has set a higher target of N25.2 trillion for 2025. This ambitious goal comes as Nigeria's 2025 budget stands at N54.99 trillion, highlighting the critical role of tax revenue in funding government operations.

The extended operational hours are expected to provide taxpayers with more flexibility and convenience in meeting their tax obligations, while simultaneously helping the revenue service maximize collections during this peak filing period.

This initiative reflects the FIRS's ongoing efforts to modernize its operations and improve service delivery to taxpayers across the country, as it works to meet the government's revenue needs in a challenging economic environment.
