President Bola Tinubu has announced he will clear his schedule to pay a condolence visit to Benue State on Wednesday following the recent deadly attacks in Yelewata community.
The attacks, carried out by suspected herdsmen in Yelewata community of Guma Local Government Area, have reportedly claimed the lives of about 250 people, making it one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent times.
Public Criticism Over Delayed Response
The President has faced mounting criticism from Nigerians over what many perceive as a delayed response to the crisis. Many citizens have questioned why the nation's leader has not yet visited the troubled area despite the scale of the tragedy.
BenriNews previously reported that at least 127 persons were identified among those killed in the Yelewata community attack, with the death toll continuing to rise as more bodies are discovered.
Reactions to the Massacre
In an earlier statement regarding the massacre, President Tinubu had urged Nigerians to "manage our anger" in response to the killings, a comment that drew mixed reactions from the public.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has promised to end the violence in Benue State, pledging increased security measures in the affected areas.
The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has also condemned the killings and demanded urgent government action to address the security situation in the state.
Further details about the President's visit are expected to be announced as the date approaches.
