President Bola Tinubu visited Makurdi, Benue State on Wednesday to address the violent attacks that claimed over 200 lives in Yelewata community. During his visit, the President emphasized that his presence was more than ceremonial.

"We're here not just to show our faces but to share in your grieves, and condole you for the lost of lives that have occurred," President Tinubu stated while addressing the people of Benue.

The presidential visit comes in the wake of a devastating attack where suspected herdsmen reportedly burned to death over 200 residents in Yelewata community, escalating the security crisis in the state.

Royal Concerns Over Crisis

During the visit, the Tor Tiv, the paramount ruler of the Tiv people, reportedly expressed concerns that the Benue security crisis has been politicized. The traditional ruler also characterized the ongoing violence as a "well-planned genocide by herders to grab our land" and appealed to the President for peace.

The Tor Tiv further reminded the President that Benue people did not vote based on religion or ethnicity, emphasizing the need for decisive action to address the security challenges facing the state.

State Police Proposal

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State reportedly told President Tinubu that state police would be the only solution to ending the killings in the region. This suggestion comes amid growing concerns about the effectiveness of federal security agencies in addressing localized security challenges.

In response to the crisis, President Tinubu reassured the people, stating, "We have enough land to feed and raise our children," suggesting a commitment to finding lasting solutions to the land-related conflicts in the region.

The President's visit represents a significant federal response to the escalating security situation in Benue State, which has witnessed recurring violent clashes between farmers and herders over the years.
