The Federal High Court of Nigeria has confirmed that its digitization process will commence as scheduled on June 23, 2025, in the Lagos Judicial Division. The court announced that the new electronic filing system will operate alongside the existing manual filing procedures in a hybrid implementation model.

According to a press statement issued on Monday and signed by the Chief Registrar, Sulaiman Amida Hassan, Esq, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Terhemba Tsoho, approved this approach after considering stakeholder feedback and operational requirements.

Gradual Implementation Strategy

The Chief Judge emphasized that the implementation would follow a structured and gradual approach, taking into account critical factors such as available infrastructure, user readiness, and staff capacity. This measured rollout aims to ensure a smooth transition to digital court processes.

"It is also to enhance access to Justice and align with global best practices in Judicial Administration," the statement noted, highlighting the court's commitment to modernizing Nigeria's judicial system.

Requirements for Legal Practitioners

The court has reminded legal practitioners to activate their Legal Mail accounts through the Nigerian Bar Association's official portal at https://nigerianbar.ng. This email service is described as a key requirement for engaging with the new e-filing system.

The Federal High Court indicated that additional details, including a revised timeline for complete digitization, would be communicated to stakeholders in due course.

This initiative represents a significant step in Nigeria's judicial reform efforts, potentially reducing case backlogs and improving efficiency in court proceedings through technology adoption.
