Cardinal Dominique Joseph Mathieu, Archbishop of Tehran-Ispahan of the Latins, has issued an urgent appeal for peace and dialogue as tensions between Iran and Israel reach dangerous new heights.

The Cardinal expressed deep concern over the escalating cycle of violence, which has included Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities under Operation Rising Lion, followed by Iran's retaliatory barrage of over 100 drones targeting Israeli territory.

"It is with regret that we observe in these last few hours, once again, that peace is sought through preventive attacks instead of committing to dialogue around the negotiating table," Cardinal Mathieu said in a statement shared with AsiaNews.

Calls for Diplomatic Solutions

The Archbishop's appeal comes at a critical moment as fears of a broader regional conflict intensify. He specifically highlighted concerns over the stalled nuclear talks between the United States and Iran that were scheduled to take place in Oman, noting that Tehran recently announced it would not participate in the sixth round of negotiations.

"We pray that peace through dialogue based on a consensus will prevail. May the Holy Spirit guide this process," the Cardinal added, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic solutions over military action.

The Church's Role in Peacebuilding

Cardinal Mathieu, who was appointed by Pope Francis and elevated to the College of Cardinals, has long been an advocate for peace and interfaith cooperation. Despite Iran's Catholic community numbering only around 22,000 in a nation of more than 84 million, he emphasized their enduring presence and mission.

"The Church remains a sign of openness and fraternity," he stated, referencing Pope Francis' efforts to promote interreligious dialogue, including meetings with Shiite leaders in Qom.

The Cardinal noted the spiritual dimension of peacebuilding, saying, "At times, doors may seem closed, but there are still people who remain connected, who pray even in front of those doors."

He concluded his appeal by urging continued efforts to build bridges across religious and cultural divides, stating that "many things cannot be resolved except through prayer."

As the situation continues to develop, the international community watches closely, hoping that diplomatic channels can prevail over further military escalation.
