The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the recent wave of violence in Benue State that claimed over 200 lives, placing blame squarely on the Nigerian government for failing to protect citizens.
In a statement signed by CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the religious body described the killings as "senseless" and said they have "inflicted immeasurable pain on families, devastated communities, and further entrenched the insecurity threatening our nation."
Persistent Failure of Protection
CAN highlighted that Benue residents have long suffered from recurrent attacks, allegedly carried out by armed groups, without meaningful government intervention or justice for victims.
"This persistent failure to safeguard citizens and bring perpetrators to account has emboldened attackers and prolonged the cycle of violence," the statement noted.
Demands for Immediate Action
The Christian body called on the Federal Government to act with urgency, demanding:
- Immediate deployment of reinforced security personnel to protect vulnerable communities
- Possible declaration of a state of emergency in the most affected areas
- A thorough, transparent investigation into the attacks
- Swift prosecution of all those responsible
"Justice must prevail to break the grip of impunity fueling these atrocities," CAN emphasized.
The association also appealed to the international community to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and rebuilding trust in Benue State.
CAN reaffirmed its commitment to defending the sanctity of life and advocating for the protection and dignity of all Nigerians, concluding with a prayer: "May peace be restored, and may justice roll down like waters."
