The Nigeria Police Force has successfully recovered several vehicles stolen in Nigeria and trafficked across borders to Ghana and Niger Republic through collaborative efforts with INTERPOL.
According to a statement released by the Force Headquarters on Sunday, a 2020 model Toyota Prado belonging to a federal government agency was recovered in Accra, Ghana after being stolen during a robbery incident in Abuja. Three suspects connected to the theft have been arrested and charged to court in Accra, with the vehicle subsequently returned to Nigeria and handed over to the agency.
Multiple Vehicle Recovery Operations
In a separate operation, INTERPOL operatives successfully traced and recovered a 2018 model Toyota Hilux that was stolen from a staff member of another government agency in Utako, Abuja, in October 2024. The vehicle was located in Agadez, Niger Republic, and has since been returned to Nigeria through the Ilela/Konni border post.
Police authorities have also revealed that arrangements are currently underway for the recovery of two additional vehicles – a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a Toyota Prado SUV – which were stolen in Abuja in May 2025 and later discovered in Niamey, Niger Republic.
Preventive Measures and Commendations
The Nigeria Police Force has urged the public to register their vehicles on its electronic platforms to improve chances of recovery in case of theft. This proactive measure aims to enhance the tracking capabilities of law enforcement agencies when dealing with cross-border vehicle theft cases.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the efforts of INTERPOL offices in Abuja, Accra, and Niamey, as well as the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, for their roles in the successful operations. The collaboration demonstrates the effectiveness of international cooperation in combating transnational crime.
These recoveries highlight the growing challenge of cross-border vehicle theft in West Africa and the importance of regional cooperation in addressing such criminal activities.
