Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 40-year-old man identified as Maduka in Onitsha for allegedly dealing in vandalized equipment belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

According to a statement released by the Police Command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrest was made on June 14, 2025, at approximately 4:15 pm in Fegge, Onitsha, following credible intelligence received by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Awkuzu.

"The team also recovered bags of vandalized copper wires, large quantities of high tension wires, copper coil and other transformer equipment," SP Ikenga stated.

Investigation Extends to Other States

The police spokesperson further revealed that the investigation is being expanded following the suspect's confession about his distribution network. "The operatives are expanding the investigation following the suspect's confession of where they sell the items in Ogun and Lagos States," he added.

This arrest highlights the ongoing challenge of infrastructure vandalism facing power distribution companies in Nigeria, which has contributed significantly to electricity supply disruptions across various communities.

The EEDC has previously reported substantial losses due to vandalism of its equipment, with copper components being particularly targeted due to their high market value in the black market.

Authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around power installations to help combat the menace of vandalism affecting critical infrastructure.
