Amnesty International has issued a strong condemnation of the Nigerian government following a devastating attack that claimed over 100 lives in Yelewata, Benue State.

The massacre, which occurred from late Friday into the early hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025, has left many dead, several missing, and dozens injured with inadequate medical attention.

Security Measures "Not Working"

In a statement posted on X on Saturday, Amnesty International highlighted the government's failure to prevent the killings, describing it as dangerous.

"The horrifying killing of over 100 people by gunmen that invaded Yelewata shows the security measures government claims to be implementing in the state are not working," the rights group stated.

According to Amnesty's report, many victims were locked inside their homes and burnt alive. The attackers left numerous people injured, while many others remain unaccounted for.

Threat to Food Security

The organization warned that the persistent violence in Benue is forcing residents to abandon their homes and could potentially lead to food shortages, as many of the victims are farmers.

"Amnesty International has been documenting the alarming escalation of attacks across Benue state where gunmen have been on a killing spree with utter impunity," the group added.

"The Nigerian authorities' failure to stem the violence is costing people's lives and livelihoods, and without immediate action, many more lives may be lost," Amnesty cautioned.

The human rights organization has called on the government to end the bloodshed and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

This latest attack comes amid growing concerns about security challenges across the country, with similar incidents reported in other states.
