Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has criticized the lack of preparation among Nigerian political leaders, stating that many venture into politics without any concrete plans or knowledge.
Speaking at the 2nd Annual Daniel Taiwo Odukoya Memorial Lecture held at The Fountain of Life Church in Lagos on Saturday, Osinbajo emphasized that this lack of preparation has contributed to politics acquiring a negative reputation in Nigeria.
"Many people go into politics with nothing, no plan, no knowledge, and end up achieving nothing. Leadership demands more," Osinbajo stated.
Call for Youth Participation
Despite the disillusionment surrounding politics, the former Vice President maintained that political engagement remains the primary pathway to leadership and influence. He urged Nigerian youths to actively participate in the political process as a vital tool for shaping the country's future.
"Politics has acquired a bad name, not just in Nigeria, but across the world. But the truth is, there is no other way to influence a nation except by engaging in the political process," he explained.
Osinbajo further cautioned that citizens who fail to participate in choosing leaders, shaping policy, or engaging with political parties forfeit their right to complain when outcomes don't reflect their values.
Vision for National Transformation
The former Vice President expressed optimism about Nigeria's future, asserting that the nation is not beyond redemption. However, he emphasized that meaningful change would only come when citizens with moral conviction and vision step forward to lead.
"Nigeria's transformation requires principled, informed, and active participation in the political space," Osinbajo remarked, highlighting the importance of prepared leadership for national development.
The lecture, which honors the memory of Daniel Taiwo Odukoya, provided a platform for discussing critical issues affecting Nigeria's political landscape and the path toward sustainable governance.
