The Lagos State Government has commenced the restoration of electricity to several communities in Badagry West Local Government Area that have been without power for up to seven years.
The affected communities include Kweme, which has been in darkness for seven years, along with Akoko, Asipa, Irosu, Gedu, Pengo, Topa, Asgbe (Owode), Farasinme, Shito, Gbethrome, Yekeme, and Pashi, which have experienced power outages for three to four years.
Prior to this development, residents of these communities faced significant hardships, with some even crossing into neighboring Benin Republic just to charge their mobile phones.
Project Implementation Begins
Solomon Bonu, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Badagry Constituency 1, announced via Facebook that work had commenced on restoring electricity to the affected areas.
"Badagry West Electricity Restoration Stage 1 (soil test) completed. Let there be light. Thank you, sir, Mr Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu," Bonu posted.
Bashir Abdullahi, a resident of Kweme community, confirmed that work has indeed begun. "They are planning to erect high-tension poles and are currently conducting soil tests. This is to prevent vandals from stealing the cables. People are very happy about this development," he said.
Improved Security Measures
Another resident, Kikekon Nunayon, explained that the new project includes improved security measures to prevent vandalism, which had been a recurring problem in the past.
"The first phase of the electrification project is ongoing. Drilling is being carried out where iron poles will be erected. Cables will be mounted on the poles, unlike before when they were laid under the Gbaji Bridge. That method made it easy for vandals to repeatedly cut the cables," Nunayon stated.
He added that the project would help revive the economy of over 50 communities in the area. While expressing gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for initiating the project, Nunayon emphasized the importance of completing it, noting that there are several abandoned projects in Badagry.
"It is commendable to see the project's commencement, and we appreciate Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. However, the most important thing is completing it. There are several abandoned projects in Badagry. We do not want this to be one of them," he concluded.
