FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has vowed to defend President Bola Tinubu amid growing controversy over the N39 billion renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, dismissing critics as people who "lack taste."

Wike made these remarks during the commissioning of the newly completed Left-Hand Service Carriageway of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) Stage II, which stretches from Ring Road 1 Junction to Wasa Junction, also known as the Apo-Wasa Road in Abuja.

The controversy erupted after Wike announced on Monday that the ICC, originally built in 1991 for N240 million, had been renovated at a cost of N39 billion. The facility was subsequently renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre during its commissioning.

Wike Defends Renovation Costs

Addressing the criticism over the substantial renovation costs, Wike explained that the renovation was comprehensive, with everything except the walls being replaced.

"We have taste, we want the best for the country, and the president has given the best for the country," Wike stated firmly.

He challenged critics to compare the exchange rate in 1991 to that of 2023, emphasizing that there is a significant difference that justifies the current expenditure.

"If you did not do well to defend your boss when you had the opportunity, it is your business. I am here, and I will defend my boss," Wike declared. "I have done it and I have no regret at all."

The renovation cost has sparked widespread debate among Nigerians, with many questioning the justification for such a substantial expenditure amid the country's economic challenges.

Wike, who has been at the forefront of infrastructure development in the FCT, has previously stated his commitment to completing all abandoned projects in the territory.
