The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called for a swift and transparent resolution to the sexual harassment allegations leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, emphasizing the need for concrete evidence to substantiate the claims.
In a statement issued by NYCN National President Isah Abubakar, the youth organization stressed that the allegations have captured national attention and demand immediate action to resolve the issues for the country to move forward.
"These include serious allegations of sexual harassment against Senator Godswill Akpabio, the tragic murder case of late Miss Iniubong Umoren, though the family has cleared the air on that and exonerated the Senate President but the senator is very much convinced that Akpabio has hands in it," Abubakar stated.
Call for Evidence and Accountability
The NYCN emphasized that integrity, transparency, and accountability are fundamental to Nigeria's democracy. The group warned that such allegations affect not only the individuals involved but also have significant implications for the reputation of the legislative body and public trust in the political system.
"It is imperative that we approach such serious accusations with an unwavering commitment to truth and justice. While we acknowledge the extreme sensitivity of this issue, we must emphasize that unsubstantiated claims can lead to irreversible damage to reputations and perpetuate a cycle of mistrust within our political institutions," Abubakar added.
The youth council specifically called on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to provide concrete evidence to substantiate her claims against Akpabio, stressing that accusations must be grounded in factual evidence to prevent a miscarriage of justice.
Upholding Leadership Standards
The NYCN stated that they hold their leaders to the highest standards of conduct and urged Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to take immediate and decisive action in addressing the issue. They implored her to communicate her next steps clearly to the public, emphasizing that transparency in this matter is paramount.
"As the Northern Youth Council, we are dedicated to advocating for justice and fairness for all individuals, particularly those who have experienced harassment. We recognize the importance of amplifying the voices of victims, but we also stress that accusations must be grounded in factual evidence," the statement read.
The group called on all parties involved, including Senate President Akpabio and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, to act responsibly, cooperate fully with investigations, and contribute to the swift and just resolution of the allegations.
