The Yobe State Police Command has apprehended a 33-year-old man identified as Ibrahim Shaibu Goni for allegedly sexually assaulting a nine-month-old baby girl in Potiskum town.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the suspect allegedly took the infant from her mother before committing the heinous act, which left the child with noticeable lacerations.
"The victim and the suspect have been taken to a medical facility for examination," the police statement confirmed.
Police Commissioner Condemns Act
Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, has strongly condemned the act, describing it as reprehensible. He assured the public that authorities would conduct a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
The Commissioner further urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant regarding their children's safety, emphasizing that stricter penalties await perpetrators of such crimes.
This case highlights the growing concern over child sexual abuse in Nigeria, where authorities have been working to strengthen protection measures for minors and ensure swift prosecution of offenders.
Child rights advocates have consistently called for more stringent enforcement of existing laws protecting children from sexual violence and abuse.
