Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria's collective struggle for democracy, emphasizing that democracy is not a destination but a continuous journey toward building a free and just nation.
In his Democracy Day message shared on his verified Facebook page, Governor Sani reflected on the significance of the June 12, 1993 election, which marked a pivotal point in Nigeria's political history.
"Thirty-two years ago, on June 12, 1993, Nigerians set aside regional, religious, and ethnic differences to overwhelmingly vote for Chief MKO Abiola in an election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in our history," the governor stated.
He noted that the day demonstrated Nigeria's unity in diversity and unwavering desire for democratic governance, despite the subsequent annulment that became "a dark chapter in our nation's history."
Challenges and Progress
Governor Sani acknowledged the significant progress made since the return to democratic rule in 1999 while recognizing the persistent challenges facing the nation.
"Our country still faces economic and security challenges. But these challenges are not insurmountable. With unity, resilience, and determination, we shall overcome them," he affirmed.
Speaking on his administration's approach in Kaduna State, the governor emphasized their commitment to strengthening democracy through inclusive and consultative governance anchored on transparency and accountability.
"The citizens are at the center of our development agenda," he added.
Call for Renewed Commitment
The governor called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to upholding democratic values and to work together for a brighter, more equitable future.
"Democracy demands our constant vigilance, engagement, and collective participation. While challenges persist, our shared resolve and belief in democratic ideals must remain firm," Governor Sani emphasized.
He concluded by expressing hope that the sacrifices of Nigeria's democratic heroes would continue to inspire citizens to protect their freedoms and deepen democracy in the country.
Meanwhile, various groups across the country have marked Democracy Day with calls for better governance and accountability, highlighting that many Nigerians are still waiting to experience the true dividends of democracy.
