Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has launched a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu's cabinet, describing it as a "joke" and incapable of addressing Nigeria's pressing challenges.

Speaking during an Arise TV interview on Monday, El-Rufai, who previously served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, expressed disappointment in the current administration's composition, suggesting it lacks the technocratic strength that Tinubu demonstrated during his tenure as Lagos State Governor from 1999 to 2007.

"This cabinet is the largest in Nigeria's history, yet very few among them can be regarded as capable or effective," El-Rufai stated during the interview.

Comparing Past and Present Administrations

The former governor drew comparisons with previous administrations that featured prominent technocrats like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Oby Ezekwesili, who brought professional experience and competence to governance.

"Where are the professionals in this government? There's clearly a lack of quality. What we have now is a disappointment," he added, highlighting what he perceives as a significant decline in cabinet quality.

Taking Responsibility

El-Rufai acknowledged his own role in supporting Tinubu during the 2023 election, explaining that his endorsement was based on the president's impressive legacy in Lagos State.

"I supported him because I believed in the legacy he left in Lagos. He brought in experts like Yemi Osinbajo and Wale Edun, and appointed people from different backgrounds. But what we are seeing today is not what I expected," he admitted.

The outspoken politician expressed a sense of obligation to speak out against what he described as a "serious mistake" that needs correction. "I cannot sit back while Nigerians are going through this hardship. If things are not corrected, we could be heading for real trouble," he warned.

Political Alignments

El-Rufai also clarified his political relationships, noting that he never had a close personal connection with Tinubu. "In the party, I was known as one of Buhari's loyalists. Tinubu had his own camp. My connection was more with Baba Bisi Akande," he explained, distancing himself from the current administration.

The former governor's comments come amid growing public discontent with the government's handling of economic challenges and other national issues.
