Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed deep concern over the persistent practice of child labour in the country, stating that it robs millions of children of their dreams and potential.
Speaking on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour 2025, commemorated on June 12, the First Lady called for intensified efforts to eradicate the practice through stronger legislation, family support systems, and investments in quality education.
In her statement marking the day, Senator Tinubu said, "Today, we raise our voices for millions of children whose dreams are stolen by the harsh reality of child labour. It is unacceptable that children are still forced to work instead of going to school, pursuing their dreams and learning how to grow into productive members of the society."
Call for Collective Action
The First Lady emphasized the need for accelerated action in line with this year's theme: "Let's Speed Up Efforts! End Child Labour!" She urged all stakeholders to work towards creating an environment where Nigerian children can thrive and reach their full potential.
"Let us speed up efforts to end child labour in all ramifications by strengthening our laws, supporting families, and investing in quality education for every child," she stated.
Senator Tinubu further appealed to Nigerians to collaborate in building "a country where every child is free to thrive, dream, and reach their God-given potential," concluding with a blessing for the nation's children.
Child labour remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, with millions of children engaged in various forms of work that deprive them of their childhood, education, and healthy development.
