A group of Benue State youths and women staged a rally in Makurdi on Thursday in support of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Hyacinth Alia, even as the state reels from recent deadly attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The demonstrators, operating under various pro-Tinubu/Alia support groups, marched through major streets of the state capital, advocating for second terms for both the President and the Governor. They eventually gathered at the roundabout leading to the Government House, where they hoped the governor would address them.

The timing of the rally has sparked significant controversy, coming just hours after armed herders launched deadly attacks in Makurdi. On Wednesday night, assailants targeted Mtsewnem and Akondutyough villages in the North Bank area, resulting in multiple casualties and numerous injuries.

Hospital Issues Urgent Appeal for Blood Donors

In response to the violence, the Benue State University Teaching Hospital has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations to help save the lives of injured victims currently fighting for survival. The contrast between the celebratory nature of the rally and the ongoing suffering has drawn sharp criticism from many residents.

Public reaction to the demonstration has been largely negative, with many accusing the participants of showing insensitivity toward the attack victims and their families. Critics point to the disconnect between the pro-government celebration and the security challenges that continue to plague the state.

The Democracy Day rally highlights the complex political landscape in Benue State, where government support coexists with ongoing security concerns that have displaced thousands and claimed numerous lives over the years.
