Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has urged President Bola Tinubu to reject the renaming of the Abuja International Conference Centre after him, emphasizing that the facility was originally built by former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida (IBB).

The controversy emerged after Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday announced the facility would be renamed "Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre" during its inauguration ceremony.

"The International Conference Centre Abuja was built by IBB. The President should reject renaming the place with his name," Sani wrote on his official Facebook page, challenging the minister's decision.

Wike's announcement included plans to rename other halls within the facility after prominent government officials including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kekere-Ekun.

The renaming has sparked debate about the preservation of historical attributions in Nigeria's public infrastructure and the appropriateness of renaming facilities built by previous administrations.

As of press time, President Tinubu has not publicly responded to the controversy or indicated whether he will accept or decline the honor.
