Manchester United legend Roy Keane has lambasted England defender Kyle Walker for his "lazy" defending during England's 3-1 defeat to Senegal in Tuesday's international friendly match.
The match at City Ground marked Thomas Tuchel's first defeat as England manager, with the Three Lions putting in a disappointing performance despite taking an early lead.
England captain Harry Kane had given Tuchel's side a promising start with a goal in the seventh minute. However, Senegal mounted an impressive comeback with Ismaila Sarr equalizing before Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly added further goals to secure a historic win for the African side.
Keane's Harsh Assessment
During his post-match analysis on ITV, Keane was particularly critical of Walker's defensive work for Sarr's equalizer, suggesting the experienced right-back's error stemmed from laziness rather than inexperience.
"Do you know what, if this was a young right-back starting out in the game you are thinking inexperience," Keane said. "But do you know what I am thinking? People maybe say a lack of concentration, I think he [Walker] is being lazy, I think he is being lazy here."
The former Manchester United captain added: "I know he had a difficult few months, but for a vastly experienced player, you can't be making mistakes like that."
Walker, who has been a mainstay in England's defense for several years, will likely need to improve his performance if he hopes to maintain his starting position under Tuchel's new regime.
The defeat represents a significant setback for England, particularly as Senegal became the first African nation to defeat the Three Lions in an international match.
Following the match, Tuchel acknowledged his team's shortcomings but has yet to address the specific criticisms directed at Walker's performance.
