Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has dissolved the management board of Jimeta Modern Market, the major commercial hub in Yola, the state capital. The dissolution takes immediate effect, according to a directive issued on Wednesday.
The governor has instructed the Chairman and members of the dissolved board to hand over all market effects in their possession to the Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, who will now oversee the market's operations.
Unexpected Dissolution
The announcement, made through the governor's Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Humwashi Wonosikou, provided no reason for the sudden change in leadership. The dissolution has raised eyebrows among market stakeholders, considering the board has been in place for less than a year.
Mr. George Kushi, the board's chairman, was approved by the Adamawa State House of Assembly in September 2024 and subsequently inaugurated by Governor Fintiri. The board had barely served nine months before this unexpected termination.
In his directive, Governor Fintiri charged the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to ensure a seamless transition while maintaining the functionality of the market, which serves as a critical economic center for Yola residents and surrounding communities.
The Jimeta Modern Market is considered the commercial heartbeat of Yola, hosting hundreds of traders and serving thousands of customers daily.
