Residents of Ganye in Adamawa State have announced plans to stage a peaceful protest on Thursday, June 12, 2025, over their lack of representation in the State House of Assembly following the death of their representative a year ago.
The protest, scheduled to coincide with Democracy Day celebrations, aims to draw attention to the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) failure to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacant seat in the Ganye Constituency.
In a statement signed by protest leader Abdulrahman Njidda, the group stated: "Notice is hereby given that some concerned citizens of Ganye intend to commemorate the upcoming Democracy Day by staging a peaceful protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission's inability to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacant seat occasioned by the passing of our late Honourable Member, Adamawa State House of Assembly, a year ago."
Protest Route and Schedule
According to the protest notice, participants will gather at the Ganye Local Council's roundabout at 6:00 a.m., proceed to Atiku Junction in Ganye by 7:00 a.m., and finally march to the INEC office at 8:00 a.m. to deliver their protest letter.
The organizers have urged "all patriotic citizens to come out en masse to join the protest" while emphasizing that the demonstration will be peaceful. They have also warned against unruly behavior, noting that security operatives will maintain surveillance to prevent potential infiltration by hoodlums.
The Ganye constituency has remained without representation in the Adamawa State House of Assembly since the death of their elected representative last year, raising concerns about democratic representation and governance in the area.
This protest highlights growing frustration among constituents over the prolonged vacancy and calls into question INEC's responsiveness to electoral needs at the state level.
